Remember your outside unit has been sitting in the elements for six months, before turning the air conditioner on and expecting it to run at full speed, it’s a good idea to have the components checked. Make sure all the wire connections are tight and the safeties are operating properly. One of the most important
things you can do is to replace your filter at least every 6 months.

Your condenser coil needs to be cleaned. This is where the heat is transferred to the outside. If you compare it to your car radiator you would not ride
around in the heat with a piece of cardboard covering half of your radiator would you? Dirt build up can have the same affect on your air conditioner. Clear
bushes and shrubbery away from the outside unit so air can get to the unit as well as the technician.

Clean your drain line. Make sure nothing is blocking the drain. Sludge can cause drainage issues.

Check pressures of refrigerant. A small leak can cause the temperature of the coil to ice up, block air flow and the unit will run longer to keep you cool.
How do you go about choosing a reputable company?

Ask your neighbors if they have someone they trust and have used for more than one year. Does the company have a place of business? Do they have a website? Are all of their technicians NATE certified? This ensures the company employs high quality technicians that requires ongoing training. This rating is similar to the automotive mechanics rating.

Be careful of low price tune-ups. Be sure to ask what’s included in the Tuneup. You could incur additional charges from the advertised price for items that
should be included in a Professional Tune-up. A professional tune-up should include: a standard filter change, washing of the condenser coil, static pressure
check, drain cleaning, checking of refrigerant charge and other items.

If there are extra repairs ask what the total installed price will be before you give your approval.

Check their ratings on places like Kudzu, BBB and Angie’s List if you are a member.

Again there are times when due to age, locked up on shaft and other reasons we will need to replace the fan blade along with the motor, but the key word here is NEED, and we will show and explain to you why we feel is necessary. It is a learning thermostat. The EPA eliminated the Energy Star rebates on programable thermostats because it found out that only 11% are successfully programmed to save energy. The nest will learn your living habits for the first week and then program itself to save you energy!

It is wi-fi capable so you can check temperture from your I-phone, I-pad or on line. Coming home earlier than normal? go online and the house will be warm when you get there. With the wi fi enabled you can chart your actual energy savings. Most thermostats are now digital which is a more precise temperature control, they do not have to be mounted exactly level and are much safer and better for the environment. NO Mercury!

You can also choose programmable or non programmable.  We are starting to see a trend toward the same thermostat that can be programmable or not by sliding a switch on back.

Programmable thermostats can really save you money.  You can drop the temperature in the house during the coldest part of each 24 hour (night time) after you are under the covers and staying warm. Let your house heat up ten degrees less and have it set to turn on thirty minutes before you get out from under the covers and you will never know you had it set back until you see your greatly reduced utility bill.

In the summer time, you can do the same thing during the day if no one is in the house and by doing that you can easily see a overall reduction of 20% or more.
